The history of Hereke carpets began with the establishment of this factory. Following Sultan Abdulmecid's idea of furnishing Dolmabahce Palace with the world's finest carpets, carpet production began in 1891. A carpet weaving workshop called "Hereke Weaving Workshop" was opened in the garden of Dolmabahce Palace, and carpet weaving masters were brought from this factory in Hereke. The Hereke carpets found in Dolmabahce Palace were woven in this workshop and the factory in Hereke. These carpets were woven exclusively for the palace, and the use of these patterns and carpets elsewhere was prohibited. The factory was transferred to the Ministry of Finance in 1925 and to Sumerbank in 1933, following the establishment of the Republic. During the privatization of Sumerbank in 1995, it was transferred to the National Palaces Directorate of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The factory continues to produce carpets and fabrics as a museum-factory under the National Palaces Directorate of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The most important feature that distinguishes Hereke carpets from other carpets is their weaving technique, which uses very fine yarn and silk as weaving material. The reason these carpets are so long-lasting is that they are woven using the "double knot" technique, also called the "Gordes knot." As the number of knots per square centimeter increases, the details in the motifs also increase. As a result, extraordinarily fine and perfectly crafted works of art are created. Some Hereke carpets have knot counts of 12x12, 14x14, or even 36x36; these carpets are among the finest in the world. An experienced weaver takes at least a year to weave a carpet consisting of one million knots. Hereke carpets, one of the first export products of the Ottoman Empire and adorning European palaces, have won first prize and medals of achievement at every international fair they have entered.
